What is social media?

Social media is a big term. It is an umbrella term for all online platforms where users can share their opinions or views without anyone interfering. Users on social media can easily communicate with each other by sharing videos, photos or other information. Besides individuals communicating with each other, it is also becoming increasingly popular among businesses. Companies can easily approach their target group and communicate with them.

Everyone knows the biggest and most popular social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik-Tok and YouTube. Each platform is different, they all have a different way of communicating. Take YouTube, on YouTube people communicate through videos. While on Instagram and Snapchat people communicate through photos. However, all these platforms have the same goal, namely connecting people.

Each platform works with its own algorithm. As a result, the platform links the right information to the right person.

Why you should advertise on social media?

Compared to traditional media such as TV, newspaper or radio, there are a lot of advantages. I will discuss some of these advantages with you to give you an insight into the benefits of social media advertising.

First of all, you can approach whoever you want. Social media gets a lot of new users every day, almost everyone uses it nowadays. This makes it possible to approach everyone and every group.

You can find out exactly where your target group is and what they like to see. This allows you, as a company, to target a particular audience or niche market very specifically. Through social media, you can reach this target group much faster and more specifically than through traditional media.

For example, you can select on: age, gender, location, language and interests. By using all these filters, you can compose a very specific target group.

In addition, you have immediate insight into what the target group says and thinks about the organisation. As a company, you have direct contact with customers via social media. If they have a complaint or disagree with something, they let you know via a direct message or comment. This allows you to see directly what is going wrong and what needs to be improved. You can see it as direct feedback from the consumer.

Also, everything on social media is measurable. You can do analyses on what goes wrong and have all insights in results. This allows you to fine-tune future campaigns using the insights from previous campaigns. Because you have more insights, you can always improve things until you get the best results. In addition, you can test things quickly and easily; which set-up or campaign runs better and where do you get the most return from? In short, social media provide you with many insights and you can quickly see what works and what doesn't, and you can make adjustments in the meantime.

Advertising on social media is also one of the most economical ways of advertising. Especially if you look at the amount of people you can approach compared to the costs.

Tips social media marketing:

  • Work with a purpose and with a plan

Before you start anything, it is important to know what you want to work towards and how you are going to achieve that goal. This is also true when using social media. If you don't know what you want to achieve, how will you ever achieve it?

According to various studies, you have up to 40% more chance of being successful if you formulate your goals clearly and make them visual. So this is very important, both for social media and beyond. 

  • Provide the right content for the right platform

Each social media platform is slightly different. Users are also looking for different things. Take LinkedIn and Tik-Tok for example. On LinkedIn, someone is looking for information and new people. While on Tik-Tok someone comes for entertainment. These people come to the platform with a completely different approach. So make sure the content fits the platform.

  • Make use of the insights

Because you communicate directly with your target group and potential customers, you regularly receive feedback. Often this is in the form of a personal message or a comment under the photo. Analyse this well and take it into account in the follow-up process.  

  • Post regularly and use a content calendar

People who follow you are following you for a reason. They are interested and want to know more about the company. It is therefore important that you retain the attention of the target group/followers. You do this by posting regularly and staying active on the platforms. A handy tool for this is a content calendar. This is a calendar in which you implant the post ahead. For example, you know for the coming months what you want to post and when. By using this calendar you don't have to stress about when and what to post, and you keep entertaining your target audience/followers.

  • Use hashtags

Using hashtags is a unique way of getting in touch with your target group. Using a hashtag, you can filter posts. For example, with the hashtag Ferrari, you will only see posts about the Ferrari brand. This way, as a user, you can follow or search for a hashtag that interests you.

By using a hashtag, you can get in touch with a specific target group faster. So use a number of appropriate hashtags when posting.
